Description: A popular folk etymology for the magic word “abracadabra” sources it in the Aramaic words Abara Ke’davra, that is, “I create as I speak.” Words have power; if they did not, we would have no reason to pray using a specific siddur, or say blessings over foods, or read certain sections of text aloud during our liturgy. Studying Rabbi Lawrence Kushner’s book, The Book of Words: Talking Spiritual Life, Living Spiritual Talk, will help us open up some of these words.
