Description:
This course surveys the excluded books of the Bible, which persist on in the various Catholic, Ethiopic, Armenian, Slavonic, and Syriac canons. We will examine how these books relate to the Bible, their vision of Judaism, and their historical context in the Second Temple period. This is a survey reading course, so works will be covered in their totality. Special attention will be paid to why these books may not have made it into the Jewish or early Christian canon and what possibilities these books open up for the modern Jewish reader.
